Theatro Municipal

Municipal Theater, opened in 1911, maintains the original Portuguese spelling of the word theater (theatro) as shown on the building’s façade. It was designed by the architect Ramos de Azevedo, inspired by the Paris opera house. The concert hall holds up to 1.550 people.
After a three year long restoration process, the Municipal Theater was re-opened in 2011. In the vast halls, the visitor will find many works of art: bronzes, busts, decorated walls, mosaics and stained glass windows, amongst works made of marble and neoclassical columns. One of the building’s main attractions is the 6 thousand crystal parts chandelier, holding 260 light-bulbs.
The theatre’s restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, and operates as a bar during presentation hours.
